SHRM states that application deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Use that deadline's time zone, not an assumed local midnight. The December deadline occurs before the testing window ends; waiting until February to apply for a February appointment would miss this published application period.

“2026–2027” here describes the published window that crosses the calendar year. It does not imply that this page has confirmed every 2027 testing window. No additional 2027 window is presented as confirmed in this guide. Do not copy last year's dates forward or assume that a recurring seasonal pattern is an application deadline.

Three dates to keep separate

Your planning calendar needs three distinct entries: the application deadline, the beginning and end of the testing window, and your own confirmed appointment. The first determines when you must complete the application. The window defines the period in which the exam is offered. The appointment is the specific time and place you book through the testing process.

A payment for a study guide, course, or AI Tutor does not create any of these official bookings. An application confirmation is not a substitute for a Prometric appointment confirmation either. Keep the messages separate and check what each one actually confirms.

Consider an illustrative candidate aiming to test near the end of January. That candidate still needs to meet the December application deadline and complete the scheduling process. The January goal should therefore be supported by an earlier application task and a confirmed appointment, not only a reminder to study during January.

How to move from application to a scheduled exam

Start with eligibility and select the appropriate credential. CP and SCP use the published testing window, but they assess different levels of HR work and have different eligibility criteria. Review the exam-format guide before deciding which preparation and appointment arrangements fit your needs.

Apply through SHRM's official certification process for the selected window and fee category. After the application process, SHRM provides an Authorization to Test, or ATT, with instructions for scheduling. Follow those instructions rather than using a preparation website as if it were the exam registration system.

SHRM currently directs candidates to authorized Prometric test centers for in-person testing. Its exam page links to the official scheduling service. An individual center's available appointments can differ from the overall window, so a published end date is not a guarantee of a convenient local seat at that time.

When booking, check the credential, test-center address, appointment date, local start time, and the name shown on the confirmation. Save the confirmation where you can retrieve it without depending on a browser tab. Use the current SHRM Certification Handbook for identification, accommodations, and appointment policies.

Choose an appointment that your study plan can support

Work backward from a possible appointment instead of choosing a date solely because it is the last available day. Leave room for full-framework review, fresh practice questions, analysis of mistakes, and a timed rehearsal. Your required preparation period depends on your starting point; a six-week example is not an official rule or an assurance of readiness.

Planning stageUseful workEvidence to look for
Before selecting a target dateReview the BASK and try an initial practice set.A realistic list of unfamiliar topics and available study time.
Early preparationBuild HR knowledge and review explanations. You can explain concepts without relying on a memorized answer.
Middle preparationMix knowledge and situational judgment practice. You can identify why a tempting response is weaker in context.
Later preparationUse fresh timed questions and revisit repeated error types.Coverage across the framework rather than one familiar question bank.
Final logistics reviewConfirm your appointment, identification, route, and permitted items.Written confirmations and a practical exam-day plan.

The six-week study plan provides one sequence for operational-level preparation. Adapt the workload to your gaps and calendar. If a busy work period removes several planned sessions, recalculate the remaining workload instead of pretending the original plan has still been completed.

For SHRM-SCP, add strategic-level scenarios and the advanced proficiency indicators. The senior credential overview explains the difference. A CP-focused PDF or short CP practice set should not be mistaken for a complete senior-level exam simulation.

Planning around the December–February window

This particular window crosses the end of the calendar year. Look at your actual work and personal commitments before choosing a date. Payroll cycles, year-end reporting, benefits work, travel, and time off may affect a particular candidate's availability, but do not assume that every HR professional has the same busy season.

Mark nonstudy days honestly. Then decide where shorter review sessions are realistic and where longer practice sessions can fit. A plan built on five consistent sessions can be more useful than a schedule that assumes every evening will be free. That is planning advice, not a finding about a universal number of hours needed to pass.

Do not make the application deadline your target application day without a reason. An earlier personal deadline gives you time to resolve questions about the application, eligibility category, payment, or scheduling instructions. The margin you choose should reflect your circumstances and the official process, not a made-up guarantee of immediate authorization.

Fees and changes to your plans

Use the fee category available when you apply. A closed early-bird period should not remain the basis of your current budget. The certification-cost guide shows the dated member and nonmember amounts and explains which fee components are already included.

Rescheduling an appointment within a window, transferring to another window, canceling, and applying after a failed attempt are not interchangeable. Read the relevant handbook and Prometric conditions before taking action. Do not assume a change is free, that a provider's course guarantee pays an exam fee, or that an appointment can be moved after a deadline has passed.

After a failed attempt, SHRM's handbook does not permit retesting within the same testing window. That is different from a generic “wait 60 days” rule. Check the next eligible published window and its application process rather than booking from an outdated article.

A simple preparation path from this calendar

Use the pages in this order: confirm eligibility, understand the format, review the BASK, and choose a study sequence. Then try the free SHRM-CP practice test and use its explanations to identify what to review.

For structured independent preparation, see the $19 SHRM-CP PDF guide. For interactive help with questions and explanations, review the SHRM AI Tutor offer and its terms. Neither is the official exam application, and neither reserves a testing appointment.

Before paying SHRM, return to its official dates page one final time. Keep your source check, application confirmation, and appointment confirmation together. The result should be a calendar based on published rules and your actual booking—not a projected date repeated across preparation sites.
